The design for Lunettes Selection’s Charlottenburg location sought to pay homage to the local
neighbourhood. Taking inspiration from Kurfurstendamm’s renown over the past hundred years as a
place for independent specialty shops, we combined a resolutely modern style with mid 20th
century references. Paradoxically, the space looks like a contemporary art gallery with nods to a
bygone opticians. The austerity of the white walls serves to emphasise the double height pastel green pharmacy
cabinet which occupies floor to ceiling space on both upper & lower floors, a spiral staircase
descending alongside it. Assembled from 375 drawers from reclaimed 1960s tool drawers, it nods to
Bleibtreustraße’s century-long history of craftsmanship. Echoing the green tones are the mossy
green curtain and mint green linoleum floor of the examination rooms - extending aesthetics into
typically aseptic places The cabinet offers unrivalled storage for the eyewear & in the result, allows the space to be left
completely uncluttered with only a very pointed selection of furniture. A wheeled cart by Jacques
Adnet, a pair of Pierre Paulin ‘Butterfly’ chairs and a Hank Kwint side table combine with a custom
commissioned pendant lamp by Berlin designer, Sebastian Summa. This combination of contemporary design alongside antique items mirrors the company’s ethos in selling both new and
vintage frames. Photography by Jacques Nguyen.
